About us
The “Free the Röszke 11” campaign consists of various individuals and groups from different countries.
We come from different activist backgrounds and use different political strategies and approaches. But we are united in our aim to fight the injustice that the Röszke 11 are facing in Europe and Hungary. For this, we have founded this joint campaign.
We struggle for freedom and equality for all.
Some of us were at the very border crossing in Röszke when the borders were closed and the police clashes broke out. Others have been active in trying to support people on the move on the so-called “Balkan Route” or used it themselves to come to Europe.
Our heterogenity is reflected on our blog, too. You will find different articles and posts from the different groups.
What we believe in
Within the frame of this campaign, we do not only try to bring about justice for those who are affected by the racist Hungarian laws against immigrants in the Röszke trials. We also seek to reveal that these trials and the underlying jurisdiction are part of a Europe-wide strategy to crack down on migrants. In 2015, the “summer of migration” received a lot of attention from media, politicians and humanitarian actors. But now, months and years later, we observe a massive backlash in asylum laws and regulations. An outstanding example is the imprisonment of migrants in various European countries. Some of them get detained for the bare fact of having migrated to a country, as it happens in Hungary; some are said to have smuggled refugees and face decade-long sentences in prison, like in Greece. What they have in common is the lack of rights and therefore an exposedness to the arbitrariness and racism of immigration laws in Europe.
We aim to fight for freedom of movement and a life in dignity. We believe we must stand with them in solidarity and not let them alone in their struggle!
What we do
We try to raise awareness of the Röszke trials in Hungary and other parts of Europe. We stay in touch with the detainees and those who have been released. We try to support their hard life in prison through visits and letters of solidarity. We organise demonstrations and public speeches, write news articles, do solidarity actions and observe the trials. We make info events in various European cities. We try to collect money to cover lawyer costs of the affected. Find our crowdfunding campaign here.
If you want to support the campaign, there is many ways to get active: you can spread counter information, make stickers, hold an event, or have a benefit dinner, let us know how we can collaborate. Let's fight together!
Until all are free, no one is free!
